- The East is simple: The winner of Saturday’s Florida-South Carolina game wins the division and goes on to play in the SEC title game in Atlanta. The West, on the other hand, is a mess: All six teams have a mathematical chance of winning the division and reaching the championship game.
- Florida seems to be peaking at the right time. And the Gators seem to be more together, more unified, than they’ve been in several seasons.
- The word is always bantered around when describing Lou Holtz: Crazy.
- They don’t hand out rings for finishing second in the SEC East. And even if they did, Holtz wouldn’t be inclined to show them off.
- “They’ll be ready by Saturday,” UF coach Steve Spurrier said. “They’ve got little sprained ankles. They should be fine.”
- In the 1990s, Florida had twice as many appearances in the SEC Championship — six — as South Carolina had winning seasons — three. The Gators have won nine or more games for 10 straight years; the Gamecocks have done it just once in their history.
- Holtz said Monday at his weekly news conference. “We might play our very best game and they may beat us badly.”
- Spurrier said he is particularly impressed with South Carolina’s defense, which ranks No.1 in the conference and 10th nationally.
