Tragedy.
My computer is dead. The power supply. This is a sad day. All is lost, lost.
You probably won’t see anything new here for some time. No eMail either. There were several (dozen) awaiting replies, I know. Sorry. I’ll write as soon as I can.
Crap.

  1. Dude – a power supply is a $20 item and takes 10 minutes to install. Relax. Go get one and put it in. You’re a computer professional, for crying out loud.

  2. I was just thinking the same thing. It’s probably not a big expensive deal.

Hey, if my cat can spill an entire bottle of diet coke into the keyboard of my laptop, and it set me back a mere $200 to replace some motherboard component, I’m SURE you are in better shape than I was.

  3. Yeah, I know. It’s not that big a deal – it’s just a pain in the butt. I’ve already replaced the power supply once in Bud and to do it again … man. I am having a million other problems. I’m a “power user”, y’know? There’s so much installed on there … and too many peripherals for it to handle. I really need to get a whole new baby. So … see … it’s more of an excuse to get a new computer. I’m looking at the Sony VAIO laptops, but I can’t decide if I want to shell out the cash for a laptop. I will probably end up going to Fry’s and getting a new power supply regardless.

  4. sounds to me like someone just wants a new computer/laptop.

  5. Lisa, some poeple say exactly what they want and other people make excuses.

    😉

dvg, you know I am kidding. Now get out there and buy that laptop!

  6. Get the $20 power supply for the short-term and the new computer in a few weeks for the long-term. Make sure you wait until after xmas and see what kind of computers have been returned to Fry’s. Fry’s has that thing where they put out returned/opened merchandise and sell it with a discount (the discount varies from either tiny to substantial so pay attention – be sure you also pay attention to the warranty/guarantee info).

  7. DVG, I know a lot of people hate ’em…BUT

I’ve got an amazing Toshiba Tecra 8200. I’m sure the next generation is already out. It’s my second Toshiba laptop. Supports TONS of my peripherals. I’ve got a fancy smantsy color printer, a digital camera hooked permanently, a CD burner, an MP3 server, a scanner…I could go on and on. I can open Photoshop, Quark, Homesite, Outlook, MS office, and play music and it’s no problem at all. It’s terrific. VAIO’s suck, I had one at my last job (sob sob, when I still had a job)

This thing is almost a year old and still **** hot, cheap to repair, if you have a clumsy pet like mine….but otherwise my last Toshiba lasted me over 3 years without even a single problem, and is still kicking as the aforementioned MP3 server. They aren’t as solid (in terms of construction) as a Conpaq. But they’re cheaper, faster and did I mention the reasonable and wonderful service from an LA area Toshiba authorized repair place?!

If you call Toshiba, as I did, they knocked a few hun off the price listed in the Toshiba store.

  8. you might want to consider upgrading to 300W if you where running 250W or less – it’s possible your system is close to the limit and the load is accelerating the failure mode …
