  • I’m confused by the many complaints I’ve seen online recently about the streaming quality of NFL games on Amazon Prime. I have AT&T Gigabit fiber at home and for regular TV use the DirecTVStream app embedded in my Samsung TV. If I want to watch something on Amazon Prime, I use their app instead, also baked into the TV software. I honestly think the image quality of the Amazon NFL games beats what I see on NBC, CBS, FOX, and ESPN on DirecTVStream most of the time, which seems crazy to me. You’d think AT&T would either boost DirecTVStream bandwidth (since they own them) or somehow hamstring the Prime bandwidth. But that’s not the case at all.

DirecTVEvery month I get a worthless email from DirecTV touted as my “snapshot”. It’s just a marketing email with links to pay my bill!

It would be really awesome, though, if they actually sent me a summary of my viewing habits for the month instead. “You watched twelve hours of American Ninja Warrior,” for example. Or, “Your living room DVR played 37 hours of the smooth jazz music station this month.”

The Price of Being Connected

Let’s take a look at my current connection costs here in Los Angeles: Service Purpose Approximate Monthly Rate DirecTV HD Satellite TV + 2 HD DVRs $135 AT&T mobile phones + data $235 Verizon land line (for alarm system) $24 Time-Warner Cable Internet $50 So I’m paying almost $450.00/mo to stay “connected”. Eek.

  • AT&T says MMS for iPhones will launch on 9/25. I really don’t see why everyone is freaking about this. I don’t really like MMS. It’s simple enough to email something from an iPhone; why not just do that? Everyone was freaking about copy and paste and I didn’t understand that either. Sure C&P is a great feature, but I’ve probably used it ten times in the last 3 months… Three years ago I had a BlackBerry Pearl and before that a RAZR and I was always thrilled just to be able to actually receive telephone calls on them. As far as I’m concerned the iPhone is the best American invention since… well… the iPod.

Television: Getting Better All the Time

Anybody out there notice a trend? It seems like the quality of shows has suddenly gotten much better in the last two or three years. My TiVo runneth over. That’s how I can tell. I can’t remember a time since the early 90s when there were so many really, really good shows on the tube.
